I went for surround sound simply to get decent sound for dialogue. I am happy with the upgrade, I enjoy the quality of the sound more than I expected.
I then ordered another 606 and it did the same thing. I ordered a Onkyo 606 and hooked it up via component cables. I have a CTR HDTV that supports component not HDMI. Finally, I wised up and ran a component cable directly from the satellite box to the TV and my problem went away. The picture form the DVD player was solid; however, the picture from my directv satellite HR 20 box would show black lines at random and flutter. I called Onkyo and they said try different component cables which I did and there was no difference. I am going to try a Denon avr 888 next as it is in my price range ($350) but I don't like that the latest audio codexs are not supported. Hopefully the Denon will not have video problems.
Bought this reciever for my mom, so ease of use and feature set are key. TV source properly. On Screen Display is nice too. Scaling performance was decent; I've seen scalers perform better, but I've also seen much worse. Only reason I rated it 4 stars out of 5 is the deinterlacing issue. I was dissapointed that the unit did not properly deinterlace 480i material though. Main reason I bought this over the TX-SR506 is the upscaling of analogue inputs for output over HDMI (obviously). Not to mention that it's Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio ready, that's a big bonus.
Granted this isn't really an issue from a DVD as most everyone has a 480p DVD player and if they don't, a very good upscaling player is only $90. Other than that, super handy that only 1 cable is required from unit to TV for all input sources, IMHO well worth the extra cash if even if it doesn't deinterlace your standard def. Can't comment on sound quality as I haven't spent much time with it, but Onkyo is going to be a decent sounding reciever no question. Killer bang for the buck.
My system has never sounded better. I've been rewatching all of my HDDVDs since. This was never a big deal to me being as though I am no audiophile, but when I needed to upgrade the Pioneer (ran out of inputs), I wanted to make sure I got a few more bells and whistles. All I can say is - WOW. I purchased the 606 a few days ago and am glad to say that I am pretty impressed with this reciever. This may be common when using the HDMI (previously running straight to TV via component) and when you power down any of your devices with the input on the 606 still connected, you get a bright blue screen. The scene where Batman rides the tumbler over the rooftops, you can actually hear pieces of the roof falling around you.
The difference is remarkable.
Even my crappy HTIB speakers filled the room with crisp, clear sound.
It also does not seem to run as hot as I thought it would, my Pioneer ran much hotter. The bad:xbox 360 takes about 5 sec.
I bought the 606 to replace my old Pioneer VSX-816 which had no HDMI thus I could not get the DTS MA/ Tru-HD lossless audio.
All of my devices fed to my 606 are sent to my TV via one HDMI cable. My devices include:TV- Hitachi 57f59Gaming console- xbox 360 (component)Gaming console/Blu-ray player- PS3 (HDMI)Cable-FIOS STB/DVR (HDMI)HDDVD player- Toshiba D2-(HDMI)I have not heard any buzzing or popping like others have mentioned.
Setup was quick and easy and I hardly had to look at the manual.
The first thing I did was use the audessy mic to calibrate my speakers and then popped in Batman Begins (Tru HD).
longer to come on screen after pressing the power button on the console.
Why didn't the just make it black. All in all, this was a great buy and I highly recommend the Okyo 606.
This product was exactly what I ordered. It was shipped before the 5 day shipping time and was packaged extremely well. I have no issues and will use your website in the future for additonal purchases.
